“Rather than mourn the absence of the flame, let us celebrate how brightly it glowed.”
At any point in our process of dying we can require support. Support can come in any number of ways. It can be, not only for the one dying, but also for those gathered to say good bye or those who are working with their grieving. Below I explain just a few of the support services I provide. As in much of life, this list is a starting point that can lead to a bigger conversation. Please feel free to email or call me any time to discuss further. - Allyson
- End of Life Plan -
An end of life plan can be arranged the moment you are diagnosed with a life threatening illness or it can begin any time you realize that you want control over your own death. Generally, an end of life plan prioritizes the actions/decisions you wish to have in place before you die. It can be very detailed with each action listed and dates you plan to complete each action. Or it can be as simple as making sure your family knows what you do and do not want concerning your dying/death.
An end of life plan can include completion of items such as an Advanced Care Plan or a Health Care Directive. It can also include having your will up to date and getting a power of attorney in place. More detailed plans can include "leaving a legacy," where you leave instructions on how to dispose of your possessions. This would include not just financial resources but your prized collection of stamps or salt and pepper shakers. Your clothing and housewares could be donated to women's shelters or newcomers to Canada. Your end of life plan can also include letters to your loved ones telling them what each of them meant to you.

- Advanced Care Plan -
An Advance Care Directive is one’s opportunity to create a plan of writing down wishes, preferences and instructions for your future health care. This can include end of life living arrangements, and an appointing of one or more Substitute Decision-Makers to make these decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so in the future.
This document is about clearly defining what you want, with the use of the Speak Up website as a nationally excepted Care Directive/Plan it is a straight forward process that can easily be walked through together.

- Dignity Therapy -
Writing a life review can be the first step to reconnecting to our lives well lived. Creating a life review is an opportunity to voice ones journey and can be a chance to create a renewed connection with yourself, gain perspective on your life and serve to wrap up loose ends, to pass on important lessons, and to capture a unique time in history.
By asking key questions and recording these conversations on two or three different visits a transcript or statement will be created to pass along personal stories in a reflective document.

- Facilitating Difficult conversations
Holding and supporting the person who is dying and their interaction with family can take so much energy. I will orchestrate family meetings, while acting as the neutral party, ensuring the necessary framework is in place to facilitate conversations with family and friends while holding the dying persons wishes in proper perspective.
This also involves listening to family members, and hearing and understanding what they too are going through.

- Planning a Memorial -
I can assist in planning a traditional or not so traditional Memorial Service. These services often take place after the body has been buried or cremated. A memorial can have people saying prayers, reading poetry, delivering eulogies, reading passages from scripture or literature, or singing songs.
Working with the family I can offer to assist in the writing of an obituary. If requested I will also deliver a eulogy and lead a memorial service should it be too difficult for the family.
