What is an End of Life Doula?
An End of Life Doula is someone trained to care for a dying individual and their families in a holistic manner (physically emotionally and spiritually) before, during and after death.
The intent of this type of Doula is to bridge the gap among the other professionals involved at end of life doctors, nurses, palliative care, funeral directors – to provide continuity and unbiased support for your journey.
End of Life Doulas can:
· Change the conversation about death and help you prepare, even before you are ill
· Provide a steady clear-headed presence during a turbulent emotional time
· Help create positive, empowering end of life plans
· Create an environment that maintains dignity physical and emotional comfort
· Provide holistic care and support to the dying and their families
· Assist in legacy planning based on your life story
· Educate patients and families on options for care and services
When the topic is health, you turn to doctors and specialists; when it’s a legal issue, a lawyer. When the doctors run out of options to save your life, you are faced with that conversation… how do you want to die? It would make sense to ask for help of a professional who has experience with supporting people who are dying.
End of Life Doulas support the dying and their families during the end of life journey, much like a midwife or doula with the birthing process. Doulas recognize death as a natural, accepted and honored part of life.
